Highlight Stories from TEFL Tales:
Acacia Lill teaching in Spain
I am most grateful for the fact that I am now able to pass on my knowledge of English to people all over the world. I thoroughly believe that learning a different language opens your eyes to different ways of life and cultures, and enables you to travel and understand the world. I now have the opportunity to give others this insight and change their lives for the better. Knowing English could get them into a university they want to go to, or get the job promotion they have always wanted, or even something as simple as helping a foreign person in a shop. Knowing a language goes a long way, and for me I am able to live my dream travelling to Spain, and improving my Spanish skills at the same time!

“Part of the fun of teaching in Rio is the unpredictability and spontaneity of each day and lesson. The funniest lesson I have had so far was with my twelve-year-old twins. I arrived at their house in Ipanema only to find that an audience was joining us. The girls had had their school friends over for dinner and as per standard procedure, we continued with our lesson on the dining room table; consorted by blank stares, mouthfuls of Black bean stew and a lot of chuckles.
Brazil is an incredible place to live and work. English teachers in Rio enjoy easy access to public transportation, cafes, restaurants and shopping areas. Working around 25 hours a week, I have plenty of time to experience Brazil’s diverse culture; go for a jog on the beach, visit an art exhibition, mingle with the friendly locals and generally enjoy the vibrant atmosphere.”
Harriett Parker teaching in Nicaraguan
“It became clear that the local Nicaraguan people were not going to be able to afford to pay for their own English lessons, although many I spoke to were very keen to learn, so I decided to approach their employers instead. Several café, restaurant and guest house owners were excited by the idea of funding their employees' English language lessons and so I began to teach small classes several times a week. The classes are conversational and informal as well as fun and goal-focused. I concentrate on service industry-related topics and vocabulary in order to help these hard-working and ambitious individuals improve their English and improve their employment prospects.
In addition to helping these individuals, since starting my teaching career in Granada, I have also felt that I have truly become part of the community. I am able to contribute in a real and meaningful way and in a way which is positively and directly impacting on the lives of Nicaraguans. Teaching English to these people in small classes allows me to really get to know them individually and to understand their strengths and weaknesses, goals and ambitions. I am able to tailor each class to suit the learning styles and preferences of the students and to give them individual attention and feedback in order to help them progress as quickly as possible.”
“The TEFL Tales series epitomize the transformative power of TEFL educators in global classrooms, where language becomes a unifying force that transcends borders. With the rise of demand for speakers in English in many different parts of the globe, the demand for American TEFL teachers also increases, presenting a gateway to international opportunities and cross-cultural connections,” said Rhyan O’Sullivan, Managing Director at The TEFL Academy.
The universality of the demand for American English has made it a prime choice for many global businesses and media. The globalization of educational reforms and policies, particularly in the field of English education from a tender age, has been driving and stirring up the demand for qualified English teachers. American TEFL teachers are at the frontier due to their nativity and fluency.
