Innovative Light Technology Increases Engagement among People with Dementia
Kent-based Social-Ability is changing the experience of care for people with dementia by utilizing interactive light technology. The innovative light technology will help create new ways of engaging people, thus giving a meaning to interaction and, above all, overall well-being.
The company specializes in designing games that can be projected upon various surfaces, such as tables, walls, and ceilings with interactive light games. In particular, the games aim to stimulate sensory responses to encourage social interaction and moments of joy for people living with dementia.
John Ramsay, managing director of Social-Ability, believes that their technology can bring about transformation. “It’s possible for people living with dementia to lead happy, fulfilling lives when they’re supported with the right resources,” he explained.
Positive Impact on Well-being and Care
There is the claim that these interactive light activities have resulted in social well-being improvements. This technology, according to the company, has seen some of its care homes reduce their prescription of antipsychotic drugs.
A spokesperson from the company explained benefits for those using this technology saying that “By engaging their senses in comfortable environments, light activities can prompt memory recall and bring real happiness to individuals.”
As the owner of the company, Mr. Ramsay shared how his personal experience of taking care of his father who has dementia inspired the creation of this technology. “We are tapping into the joy and happiness that still exists for people with dementia,” he said. “Our technology with interactive lights is creating incredible engagement.”
The interactive light technology is benefiting the residents but also leaves a positive impact on the caregivers. Mikayla Lawrie is the manager at Avery Healthcare’s Guildford House Care Home. She highlighted that the technology has many benefits, such as: “It really gets them out of their comfort zone. It brings everyone together but also helps us with our careers. Everyone can get involved,” she explained.
The games provide an inclusive experience, allowing residents, staff, and even visitors to participate. This shared interaction helps strengthen bonds and creates a supportive community environment within care homes.
The Growing Need for Dementia Care
According to NHS data, over 944,000 people in the UK are currently living with dementia, which is approximately one in 11 people aged over 65. This figure is likely to exceed one million by 2030 as life expectancy continues to rise.
Dementia brings unique challenges, and in managing symptoms such as aggression or psychosis, the Alzheimer’s Society says that there is sometimes a prescription for antipsychotic drugs; however, these are normally considered only after other interventions have been tried.
With increasing dementia cases, the time is ripe for innovative non-pharmaceutical interventions, such as Social-Ability’s light technology. The former is not only improving quality of life for people suffering from dementia but also significantly reducing the use of medications to bring about more holistic care.
A Brighter Future with Light Technology
Social-Ability work is an example of technology being used to improve people’s lives with dementia. It is creating tools both engaging and therapeutic, which gives way to a future wherein individuals with dementia can lead happier and more connected lives.
As John Ramsay puts it succinctly, “Our goal is to tap into the happiness that still exists for people with dementia and to create moments of genuine connection.
