Ukraine Endures Energy Strikes on Christmas Day, Zelensky Vows Resilience

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has condemned a significant attack on his country’s energy infrastructure carried out by Russian forces on Christmas Day. The strikes caused widespread power outages across Ukraine, including in the capital Kyiv, forcing many residents to seek shelter in metro stations.

A Nationwide Impact

The Ukrainian air force reported the detection of 184 missiles and drones during the attack. Many of them were intercepted or missed their targets, but casualties and significant damage occurred, nonetheless. The figures are not known.

This attack was the 13th major attack on Ukraine’s energy sector this year, according to the country’s largest private energy provider, DTEK. Such attacks continue to strain the nation’s infrastructure, as there is a report stating that already 80% of the energy network in Ukraine has been damaged since last months.

Responding with Resolve

President Zelensky characterized the timing of the attack as a “conscious choice” and described the strikes as “inhumane.” Nevertheless, he vowed not to give up, stating that “Russian evil will not break Ukraine and will not distort Christmas.”

In cities such as Kyiv and Kharkov, people suffered disruptions; a half-million in Kharkov went without water, electricity, or heating as the temperatures dropped.

Restoration work continues for power supplies. Utility companies warned that cuts may continue through the day.

A Defiant Spirit

Despite all the challenges, the Ukrainians showed extraordinary strength. Most residents assembled in shelters and were unwilling to let the attacks destroy the spirit of the holidays. “Christmas is not cancelled,” Oleksandra said from Kyiv, planning to spend it with traditional Ukrainian food and drink when it’s safe to do so.

Zelensky reflected the same mood: The attacks will not weaken the nation’s resolve nor break its spirit to stay together during the festive season.

Regional and International Reactions

The strikes also caused anxiety outside Ukraine’s borders. A missile reportedly passed through Moldovan airspace, which Moldovan President Maia Sandu condemned. Romanian authorities stated that no missile was detected in their airspace.

Meanwhile, four people were reported killed, and five others injured in what officials described as Ukrainian shelling in Russia’s Kursk region.
